BRAINSTORMING: Presentation Video

As I mentioned previously, one of the things I would like to see put together is a very simple web site, one suitable for promotion to the general public, about what market anarchism is and why they should get involved in promoting it. This web site could be promoted offline via techniques like simple canvasing operations.

As I envision it, the site would be structured in a step-by-step fashion rather than being randomly browsable. Canvasers would be generating "leads" by refering people to the web site and the web site would attempt to "close the sale", metaphorically speaking. The first step would be to watch a simple introductory presentation, offered via flash video.

Let's talk about what you would like to see in such a video. Basically, what I have in mind is something comparable to the popular Philosophy of Liberty video, but with a slightly different focus: What is Market Anarchism?

Thoughts? Concerns? Script ideas? Animation skills to offer? Themes you'd like emphasized?

Talk to me, people.

What I'd like to know...

...if viewing a website or video called something like "anarchyisok.info" would be nice simple answers to the "yes but how...." questions:

If you don't have a government, who looks after the poor?

If you don't have a government, how are criminals dealt with?

etc.

Maybe we could start with a list of those questions?

Ideas

A video is a great idea because--dare I say it?--we can control what information is provided in a neat, easy to understand package.

As far as video content: I really thought this site's explanation of anarchy as the political conclusion of true, ethical libertarianism is one of the most succinct explanations I have ever heard. That's a better starting point than "Anarchy means no government" because people watching will only see chaos and may turn away before they hear anything more. Konkin's moral consistency argument should be the root we expand from because it is very hard to refute.

The people I've talked to usually accept the Non-Aggression Principle. They just haven't moved it up the field. They only think of it in kindergarten terms: don't hit someone or take their candy. If we can start there and then show them how every government action breaks the Non-Aggression Principle, we'll have 'em.

There were two arguments that turned me to anarchy...

1)The practical argument: saying that anarchy can work and touching on a few possibilities need not be tedious and should go a long way in breaking through the typical connotation of an anarchist as a bomb-throwing loon. (I like how LeftLibertyAppendix does it on youtube, but he moves a bit too fast for an ideological newcomer.)

2)The much more important moral argument: For this I think Carl Watner and the other voluntaryists walk a near perfect line in that regard. The video should ask: Who could wage war except the state? Is taxation theft? etc.

I agree with Skyler827 that we could learn a lot from the atheist Evid3nc3's videos. Winning an argument such as this is an uphill battle; it's like pulling someone out of the Matrix. One has to approach it logically and methodically.

Would it be too cheesy to have a video or series of videos (short ones, of course) that show anarchists talking about why they are anarchists? That way people could put a face to the concept. And I don't mean a Motorhome Diaries interview format per se, but more of a "Hi, I'm Bob and I'm an anarchist because..."

Just spitballing...

Possible Script or the start of one?

Dear BlackVanguardians,

I was slinging around the interwebs and happened upon this little gem by the always eloquent Less Antman.

  • What is Anarchy?
  • THE WORLD IS HEADED TOWARD ANARCHY!

Relax, this is a good thing.

What is anarchy? The absence of government. So what is government? Legitimized aggression. Thus, an anarchist is someone who doesn’t believe it is ever appropriate to be an aggressor: to initiate force or fraud against someone else.

Does that sound radical? It shouldn’t: it is the way you try to live your own life, unless you are a career criminal or politician. It is the way decent people treat each other all the time: with mutual respect.

The underlying principle of anarchy is that you own yourself. From that, an obvious corollary is that other people own themselves. Which leads to the reasonable conclusion that you don’t own other people. Or, as anarchist Roderick Long put it:

Anarchy is the radical notion that other people are not your property.

For virtually all of recorded history, the idea that some people could own and control the lives of others was accepted: slavery was almost universal. Then, starting a couple of hundred years ago, this idea was rejected throughout the world. Unfortunately, they left in one exception: it remained acceptable for some people to own and control the lives of others, as long as the ones in charge did it in the name of “government.” But the idea of self-ownership has continued to advance, and we will soon come to accept that the exception needs to go.

Anarchy is self-control. Tyranny is controlling others.

Don’t be a tyrant: be an anarchist.

Introductory video thoughts

I think the the needs of such an intro will depend on the political views of the people we're dealing with. For example, I've debated with many socialists who say "I agree with you that government is corrupt, but we can't have no government because the free market doesn't work." Others, mostly conservatives, say stuff like "The free market is great, but government isn't corrupt." We need to tackle a number of different false mindsets here, so the intro should reflect that.

Check out this series of videos:

it explains how one Christian deconverted and became an Atheist, not because of any one argument, but because of the numerous beliefs that were needed to uphold the false Idea. I think the solution is to tackle all of these beliefs, namely, that the free market is exploitative, that human nature is corrupt, that people take power over others, and that force solves problems. Different people have some or all of theese beliefs, and we need to break them apart in a consistent and organized way. I think it's the only way for them to understand market anarchism.

free exchange

as far as terminology, in my book... free exchange > free market.
